New rules offer greater support and flexibility to families
Türkiye introduced important changes to its parental leave legislation with the entry into force of Law No. 7578 on 1 May 2026.
The new regulation extends maternity and paternity leave and aims to provide greater support for working families. Although these changes are not directly related to private health insurance or employee benefits, they are important for employers and HR professionals managing their workforce in Türkiye.
What Has Changed?
- Paid maternity leave has been extended from 16 weeks to 24 weeks
- Paid paternity leave has been increased from five days to 10 days
- Employees who receive medical approval may continue working until two weeks before childbirth
- Any unused prenatal leave is added to the postnatal leave period
- New leave rights for foster parents
- Transitional provisions for employees affected by the implementation of the new legislation
Why Is This Important for Employers?
These changes require employers to review their HR policies, employee handbooks and leave management procedures.
Companies should also consider the operational impact of longer leave periods, including workforce planning, temporary replacement arrangements and payroll processes.
For international companies operating in Türkiye, it is important to ensure that local HR practices remain compliant with Turkish legislation while staying aligned with global employment policies.
