The introduction of the law reflects a broader European trend towards more inclusive leadership.

On 18 August 2026, Poland’s Women on Boards Act entered into force, implementing the EU directive aimed at improving gender balance in the leadership of publicly listed companies.

What the Act changes

The legislation introduces new requirements for the selection and appointment of supervisory and management board members, with a focus on ensuring transparent recruitment processes and equal opportunities for female and male candidates. The objective is to increase the representation of women in top decision-making roles and promote greater diversity in corporate governance.

Who is affected

The new rules will primarily affect companies listed on the Warsaw Stock Exchange, with estimates suggesting that around 140-150 Polish listed companies could fall within the scope of the legislation. Employers covered by the Act may need to review their board nomination procedures, succession planning processes, and diversity policies to ensure compliance with the new requirements.

Why it matters

The introduction of the law reflects a broader European trend towards more inclusive leadership and recognition that diverse boards can bring broader perspectives, stronger governance, and better business outcomes.
