On the occasion of its 100th anniversary, GrECo is implementing numerous internal events and initiatives, including the sponsorship of the Mount Kenya three-horned chameleons at Schönbrunn Zoo.

GrECo, the leading Austrian risk specialist, is celebrating a special anniversary this year: 100 years of company history. From a classic insurance broker, GrECo has developed into a comprehensive risk specialist. To celebrate this milestone, GrECo is sponsoring the Mount Kenya tricorn chameleons in the new Species Sanctuary at Schönbrunn Zoo.

Chameleon as a symbol of adaptability and change

The choice of the chameleon as a totem is no coincidence, but a clear statement of the company’s philosophy. “For over 100 years, GrECo has stood for successful risk management. The chameleon, like risks, are constantly changing, sometimes clearly visible, sometimes well camouflaged, but always present,” explains CEO Georg Winter.

Chameleons are among the most fascinating reptiles. They can move their eyes independently and look in different directions at the same time – forward, to the side and back. In some cultures, the chameleon stands for time, as it can look forward, backward and to the side at the same time – a symbol of the connection between the past, present and future. This makes the chameleon the perfect symbol for 100 years of GrECo – a history that is characterised by constant change, but above all looks to the future.

Animal garden director Dr. Stephan Hering-Hagenbeck adds: “The Mount Kenya three-horned chameleon is a species endemic to Kenya that is threatened by habitat loss in its natural habitat. Our animals come from a confiscation in the 1990s – since then we have been breeding this species successfully. Their care requires very special expertise, particularly regarding temperature and humidity control. We are pleased that GrECo is not only setting an example for foresight and change with its sponsorship but is also making a very concrete contribution to the preservation of this special animal species, both within the zoo and beyond.”

100 years of GrECo: from insurance manager to risk specialist

The development from an insurance company to a risk specialist reflects GrECo’s aspiration to continuously develop and react to changing market conditions. In a world where risks are constantly changing and new challenges are emerging, GrECo offers tailor-made solutions for its clients.

The sponsorship at Schönbrunn Zoo illustrates the company’s long-term commitment to sustainability and social responsibility. At the same time, it creates a link between the chameleon’s adaptability and the individual risk expertise that has distinguished GrECo for 100 years. “The chameleon stands for change and flexibility – values that also shape our corporate culture. As part of our anniversary, we are using it specifically in internal communication and at our celebrations. It is a strong symbol that reflects our development and team spirit in a creative way“, adds Petra Steininger, Head of Corporate Communications.

Looking to the future: innovation, sustainability and global presence

The anniversary year will be marked by numerous internal events and initiatives that celebrate the company’s long history while focusing on future innovations in risk management. “Our employees are at the heart of our success. Their expertise and dedication have made GrECo what it is today. They are therefore also the focus of our anniversary celebrations,” emphasises Markus Neubrand, Head of Mergers & Acquisitions and part of the owner family. After 100 years, the family-owned company now has over 1,300 employees and 69 branches in 21 countries.

Looking ahead to the next 100 years, GrECo is increasingly focusing on innovation and sustainability. “The risk management landscape is changing due to new technologies, global challenges such as climate change and dynamic market conditions. We will continue to expand our expertise in order to identify both known and new risks at an early stage and to develop tailor-made solutions,” explains Georg Winter. “With innovative strength, a clear focus on the individual needs of our clients and a strong team, we are optimally equipped for the challenges of the coming decades.” GrECo also plans to further expand its international presence and enter into new strategic partnerships to provide even more comprehensive support to companies worldwide.
