Slovenia Paves the Way for a Healthier Future

By improving the quality of healthcare services and making them more accessible, these health reforms are set to bring about significant changes in the Slovenian healthcare landscape.

Slovenia is undergoing significant health reforms aimed at improving the overall healthcare system. These reforms are set to transform the landscape of healthcare delivery, making it more efficient and accessible for all citizens. 

  • Healthcare Digitalization Act: The Slovenian government is working on a unified digital database of all health records. This initiative aims to reduce bureaucracy, improve patient care, and simplify documentation. Although the initial draft was rejected, a new proposal is being prepared. 
  • Family Medicine: There is an increase in the team size from 0.5 to 1 registered nurse per practice. Additionally, training practices for residents are being introduced, allowing them to register patients. 
  • Emergency Medicine: Measures are being implemented to improve conditions in emergency departments, which are currently facing staff shortages. 
  • Attracting Foreign Healthcare Workers: Simplified procedures are being introduced for foreign professionals to work in Slovenia, along with additional residency slots in critical medical fields. 
  • Separate Pay Structure for Healthcare: The goal is to ensure fairer wages and better motivation for healthcare workers. However, there have been delays in implementation, leading to dissatisfaction among doctors. 
  • Health Literacy: The National Strategy for Health Literacy 2025 – 2035 has been adopted, with the goal of having at least 60% of the population achieve adequate health literacy by 2035. 
  • Digital Health Literacy: Development of digital tools and training for both patients and healthcare professionals is underway. 
  • Support for Vulnerable Groups: Special programmes are being developed for chronic patients, the elderly, and socially disadvantaged individuals. 
  • Involvement of Civil Society and Communities: NGOs and local communities are playing a greater role in health promotion.
