The continuously increasing healthcare costs in private medical institutions caused by inflation, lack of medical staff, and overcrowded public medical institutions have led to several significant changes in the health insurance landscape in Lithuania.
Market trends to note:
- Health insurance premiums are still growing in accordance with healthcare prices.
- Insurers are pushing to change insurance programmes by significantly reducing part of the compensation for outpatient treatment to balance the risk of loss. This may involve limiting coverage of some private medical institutions’ services, especially the most expensive ones.
- Mobile applications have been created by insurers for easier use of health insurance. These applications allow users to see a history of compensations, request compensation, have online visits with a family doctor (via audio or video call), and get prescriptions for medicines. These advantages save time for insured individuals and simplify the treatment process, especially for employees located in the countryside.
- This summer, ERGO International AG signed an agreement with the Norwegian non-life insurance company ASA Gjensidige Forsikring regarding the acquisition of its subsidiary ADB Gjensidige registered in Lithuania, including its branches in Estonia and Latvia. With this transaction, ERGO will expand its operations in three Baltic countries and strengthen its position in the local market. The decreasing competition and the limited number of proposals have caused higher insurance prices and stricter insurance conditions.
These changes highlight the evolving landscape of health insurance and pension schemes in Lithuania. For more information or if you have any questions about how these trends and legislative amends affect businesses in the region, please contact us.
