This update aims to better support employees during business trips.

The Ministry of Labour, Social Affairs and Family of the Slovak Republic has proposed an increase in the value of the meal allowance due to rising prices of meals and non-alcoholic beverages in restaurant catering. This update aims to better support employees during business trips.

New Meal Allowance Amounts:

  • For business trips lasting 5 to 12 hours: €8.30
  • For business trips lasting 12 to 18 hours: €12.30
  • For business trips lasting over 18 hours: €18.40

New Meal Allowance Amounts:

  • Optimal value: €8.30
  • Minimum value: €6.23

Effective Date: Employees are entitled to the new meal allowance amounts from 1 September 2024.

Things to Note:

  • Despite the increase, the new meal allowance amounts still do not fully reflect the real costs of employees, as lunch prices continue to rise across all regions of Slovakia. According to the Edenred TRC index, the average spending per lunch after March 2024 ranged from €7.69 to €9.60.
  • Employers are required to arrange for meals or meal allowances. If supporting the meal allowance, the minimum employer contribution is 55% of the value of the meal voucher.

These changes are part of ongoing efforts to better support employees during business trips. For more information or any queries, please contact our team.
