New Additional Leave for Parents of Premature Babies in Poland

This new provision aims to provide crucial support to families during challenging times, ensuring they can care for their newborns without financial stress. 

On 18 December 2024, Poland announced a significant update to its Labour Code to support parents of premature babies and those requiring hospitalization after birth. Here are the key details: 

  • Eligibility: Parents of babies born prematurely or those hospitalized after birth. 
  • Application: Parents must submit an application to their employer along with a medical certificate detailing the week of pregnancy, birth weight, and duration of hospitalization. 
  • Allowance: The allowance for the period of additional maternity leave is 100% of the allowance base. Additional maternity leave must take place immediately after the standard maternity leave is over. 

Duration: Up to 15 weeks of additional maternity leave.  

  • Up to 15 weeks: For babies born before the 28th week of pregnancy or with a birth weight of no more than 1,000 grams. 
  • Up to 8 weeks: For babies born between the 28th and 36th week of pregnancy or full-term infants requiring hospital treatment.   

This new provision aims to provide crucial support to families during challenging times, ensuring they can care for their newborns without financial stress.
